The 1959 Smith-Corona Skyriter: A Review.

  1. Thanks for the review. I like these '50s Skyriters too (except in the looks department, as you noted).

In the '60s-'70s, SCM produced the same basic design in a plastic body under the name Corsair, etc., and quality went downhill: they used cheaper, easily bendable metal, and those little typewriters can't hold up under serious use.

I'd like to check out the '30s machine that started this line, the Zephyr, but haven't seen one in person yet.

  2. I hear that the Zephyr is pretty good as well! I've never seen one either.

  3. I have a small SCM from the '70s that is a direct descendant of this machine. I'm surprised the keys were already that shape in the '50s. Mine's from the England factory and types in script. Even that one has a marvelous feel to it. I'm sending it to a young relative getting a degree in creative writing.
